Consistent with Calluna's philosophy on wine making, we eschew the soft, fruit-bomb style of Malbec in favor of a wine of focus. The vivid fruit includes a hint of the flamboyant blueberry character of Malbec and it is joined by the bright acidity and savory elements which keep the wine in balance. With moderate alcohol and no new oak barrels used, this Malbec pairs perfectly at the table with braised stews, grilled meats and mild hard cheeses.
With the enviable position at the top of the property, The Colonel’s Vineyard is a small, 1 ¼ acre block planted to clone 337 Cabernet Sauvignon back in 2005 after acquiring this undeveloped hillside property.
“…beautiful violet, chalky minerality…”

Our flagship wine: 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, and 2% Malbec from our estate vineyards on Chalk Hill.
The 2017 is one of our bigger, riper vintages, but this wine retains its elegance and will age well. Enjoyable now, particularly at the table, but laying some down will repay one’s patience for sure.
This wine comes primarily from our tiny block of Merlot dedicated to Alain Raynaud and his family of Bordeaux. At once a great innovator and a great traditionalist, Doctor Raynaud taught David Jeffrey much of what he knows of the wines of Bordeaux when he worked at Chateau Quinault in St. Emilion. In return, Calluna offers Aux Raynauds as a wine reminiscent of that region – with Merlot French Clone 181 on 420a rootstock, and a bit of Cabernet Franc – combined with the signature of our Sonoma terroir.
The 2018 Calluna Vineyards Cuvée is an expression of our Chalk Hill appellation where great sunlight and a cool climate produces intense fruit in a wine with balancing acidity, round tannins and moderate alcohol levels. The blend expresses the power of Cabernet Sauvignon, elegance of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and a bit of showiness from Malbec and Petit Verdot.
"This has been one of California’s finest values in the world of Bordeaux blends for many years, but the 2018 may well be one of most complete vintages yet for this lovely cuvée."

From our estate vineyards, a blend of 74% Sauvignon Blanc and 26% Semillon.
"The bouquet is bright and classy, wafting from the glass in a mix of grapefruit, lemon, fresh-cut grass, a touch of beeswax, a nice base of soil and just a whisper of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is bright, full and complex, with a lovely core, excellent focus and balance, zesty acids and a long, classy finish. This is a lovely example."

“The 2018 Calluna Estate Blanc is excellent. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a very stylish blend of gooseberry, green apple, a touch of beeswax, salty soil tones and a whisper of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied, focused and vibrant, with a good core, bright acids and lovely focus and grip on the long and complex finish. This is very fine juice.”
Calluna’s Estate Blanc comes from our 2.5 acre block of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon planted on the northeast slope of the vineyard.
“This blends 58% Sauvignon Blanc and 42% Sémillon, from estate-grown grapes at a high-elevation site in the appellation. It is barrel-fermented and aged in neutral French oak. Floral and pretty on the nose, it is stony and steely on the palate, with integrated acidity and nuanced oak. Lushly crafted, it’s deliciously complex.”
Calluna’s inaugural bottling of Estate Blanc comes from our 2.5 acre block of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon planted on the northeast slope of the vineyard in 2013.
This is a wine of bright acidity, moderate alcohol and great depth of flavor. These varietals complement each other as the rounder and honey-like tones of the Semillon are a counterpoint to the citrus, mineral and brighter tones of the Sauvignon Blanc. The barrel fermentation and barrel aging further harmonize the wine, giving us a graceful wine which belongs at the table and will potentially age for many years.

"Calluna isn’t some one-hit-wonder. I’ve had my eyes fixated on every release for the majority of my career and have no qualms or hesitations putting them in the highest percentile of elite producers. The “CVC” Bordeaux blend is an annual force to be reckoned with."

“… offers up a complex and classy bouquet of cassis, black cherries, tobacco leaf, a touch of menthol, dark soil tones and a judicious framing of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very suave on the attack, with a fine core, moderate tannins and fine length and grip on the well-balanced finish.”
Taking its cue from the Right Bank of Bordeaux and the village of Saint Emilion where winemaker David Jeffrey apprenticed with Dr. Alain Raynaud, the Calluna Vineyards Cuvée is a blend built primarily on Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon playing an important role along with Malbec and Petit Verdot.

Our flagship wine: a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec & Petit Verdot from our estate vineyards on Chalk Hill. The Calluna Estate is a monumental wine in 2016.
“The finest wine I’ve tasted from this estate, it’s medium to full-bodied, concentrated, has building tannins, and considerable elegance and purity.”

“…the finest young wine I have tasted from David Jeffrey since the stellar 2011 Calluna Estate... On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and shows off beautiful mid-palate depth, with outstanding focus and grip, good acids, seamless tannins and a very long, very young and impeccably balanced finish.”

"Offering impossible depth, complexity, and savory detail, Calluna Estate’s revered, Cabernet-driven 2014 Chalk Hill Red firmly puts luxury Left Bank titans in their place. This is built to shatter expectations—and it’ll continue doing so over the next 10-20 years."
The 2012 vintage gave us a bounty of fine components to choose from for our Estate Red. We selected the final blend 8 months after harvest and its additional year+ of barrel aging allowed those components to marry into a wine of harmony and power.
"An elegant and beautiful wine with a deep ruby/purple color, Bordeaux-like minerality, crème de cassis, licorice, earth and spice. This is a beauty that should drink well for 15-20 years. Impressive.”
"The bouquet is simply stunning… On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and supremely elegant, with a great core of sweet fruit, strikingly soil-driven and perfectly balanced, with firm, ripe and integrated tannins, laser-like focus and a very, very long, refined and complex finish. Sheer brilliance!"
The Calluna Estate, our reserve wine, is my highest aspiration in winemaking – a Bordeaux blend of selected barrels from our estate. My goal is to have this wine stand with the best wines of Bordeaux and California. Intensity with balance, significant but well-integrated oak (60% new), true to its terroir.

In return, Calluna offers Aux Raynauds as a wine reminiscent of that region – with Merlot French Clone 181 on 420a rootstock, and a bit of Cabernet Franc – combined with the signature of our Sonoma terroir.

"Deeply colored, with a mineral-laced bouquet of black and blue fruits, graphite, lead pencil, and smoke tobacco, it’s medium to full-bodied, incredibly concentrated, structured, and tannic on the palate... it’s a seriously promising, rich, structured Cabernet that’s going to be incredibly long-lived.”

75 cases produced.
